Choleast contains Monascus purpureus, a red-pigmented yeast grown on rice. Numerous studies in China and the United States have demonstrated that red yeast rice preparations are helpful in maintaining blood cholesterol levels already in the normal range.* This is important, as maintaining optimal cholesterol levels has been shown to be one component of maintaining cardiovascular health.*
In addition to naturally occurring substances called monacolins, red yeast rice contains the phytosterols beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol, as well as isoflavones and trace minerals, all of which can contribute to cardiovascular health.*
The same enzymes involved in cholesterol synthesis are also involved in the synthesis of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Thus, to help maintain normal levels of CoQ10, Choleast contains 15 mg CoQ10 per capsule.* Red Yeast Rice, Monacolins, and Citrinin Content Red yeast rice is obtained by a specific process that ferments rice. One of the natural by-products of the rice fermentation process is citrinin, although usually the more sophisticated the fermentation process, the lower the amount of citrinin that is produced as a by-product. Citrinin is a mycotoxin. Thorne's Choleast is a wonderful product! My cholesterol index improved dramatically from the year before I started taking it, to the next year when the doctor checked it again! He wanted to know what I had done to change it....I told him Red Yeast Rice or "Choleast" with Q10...from Thorne Research. He said he didn't think that would make a difference...well, I told him I had not changed much else, and he needed to start believing in what he saw in the tests in front of him! I am a medical professional myself, and I can tell you others who have had dramatic improvement in their cholesterol taking this medication!! And I only take one pill a day, others have been taking two...it really works!

I started taking Choleast a little over a month ago. My doctor just did a blood test and my LDL is DOWN 60 points! My good cholesterol is UP 8 points. My cholesterol has not been this good in over 10 years. This is the best product I have used in years. I can't recommend it highly enough. I am so happy I didn't have to take statin drugs. Thrilled!

My doctor put me on Thorne Research - Choleast (red yeast rice)to control cholesterol. Apparently the active ingredient is levostatin but it comes naturally with other substances which mitigate the side effects often experienced with pure statins, e.g. muscle ache/weakness. Red yeast rice is not a controlled drug so different brands contain different quantities of active chemicals. My doc has found Choleast to work for his patients, he said.
