_I played this early edition of Age of Empires for years before Age of Empires 2 (Age of Kings) came out. Then I gave it away. After a while I came to miss the classical units like the Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans. Both the fighting units and the architecture had a quality that the later medieval version lacked. So, when this low priced jewel case version hit the shelves I bought for old-time's sake. I wasn't disappointed.

_Sure, there are functions that are missing from the later versions, but 90% of the engine is there. If anything it is more challenging to play the earlier version- it takes more skill to compensate.

_On the other hand, you will miss things like functioning gates, exchanging goods at the market, gunpowder units, and increased artificial intelligence of the opponents and workers. My primary irritation is not being able to send units into battle in definate formations like lines and squares. But then, it can be challenging to get around these... Read more

There is an element of this game (and age of empires 2) that must strike some primal chord in me because I've been playing it for ten years and I still enjoy it tremendously. The newer similar games use a different interface and I just never liked them as much
